Obituary

Taylors, South Carolina

Roger Greer, 88, transitioned peacefully at home on Thursday, November 21, 2024, surrounded by his family. Born on April 30, 1936, in Greenville County, South Carolina, he was the eldest of seven children born to Garlin Columbus Greer and Lillian Durham Greer.

Roger was a proud alumnus of Lincoln High School in Taylors, South Carolina where he excelled on the football field and often shared stories of his athletic accomplishments, passing down that same pride to his children.

A loving father, grandfather, and friend, Roger grew up with a strong sense of family and community, values he carried with him throughout his life. Roger was married to his beloved wife, Catherine McBee Greer. Their 66 years of marriage were a testament to their unwavering devotion to each other. Together, they raised ten children, creating a legacy filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories. His love for his family knew no bounds. Known for his no-nonsense demeanor, Roger had a deep passion for the Carolina Panthers and the Clemson Tigers, loyally cheering them on through every season.

His sharp sense of humor shone through his love of playing spades and his dedication to bowling, where he participated in leagues consistently until his health began to decline. Professionally, Roger worked for R.J. Reynolds, Greenville Public Works, and as a truck driver, with his final full-time position at Gaines Motor Lines, where he maintained an impeccable driving record throughout his career before retiring.

Roger was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Plummer Durham and Tecora Peters Durham; paternal grandparents, Beattie Greer and Aleatha Goodlett Greer; son Richard Eugene Greer; his sisters, Shirley Fulton, Azalea Harris, Sharon Middleton, and Frankie Whiteside; his brothers, Walter Greer, Sr., and Donald Greer.

Roger leaves to cherish his memory; his devoted wife, Catherine McBee Greer; his loving children, Charisse (Winford) Moss, William (Sytrena) Greer, Eddie (Michelle) Greer, Lamont (Benita) Greer, Shirl (Bennie) Killingsworth, Emily Towyanna (Reverend W.O., Jr.) Harrison, Reverend Michael (Vickie) Greer, Tammy Greer McClain, and Timothy (Nezarene) Greer; 32 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; his sisters-in-law, Barbara Winston and Karen Greer; and a host of beloved nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

Roger was a devoted advocate for his children, always standing firmly in their defense. His unwavering honesty, sharp wit, and commitment to his family will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.
