Marcelina
Goodlett
May 3, 1932 – December 26, 2021
Mrs. Marcelina Goodlett, age 89, of Spartanburg, SC, passed away 12/26/21. She is from the small town, Consolacion del Sur, in Cuba. Southern Baptist Missionaries from Greenville, SC, who were in Cuba, became acquainted with her and brought her to the United States where they funded her education at Shaw University, a historically black Baptist college in Raleigh NC. Mrs. Goodlett majored in Religion, English and minored in Music. This served as a foundation for her future career as a high school teacher of English and Spanish, her work with church and school choirs and teaching private piano lessons to many students. While in college, she met Johnie C. Goodlett of Greer, SC. who attended North Carolina A&T, another historically black college. They eventually married and settled in Spartanburg, SC where she retired from teaching at Spartanburg High School. She was a faithful member of Johnie's family church, Jubliee Baptist Church in Taylors, SC for over 65 years.
Mrs. Goodlett is survived by her daughters Kristi and Karen (husband Reginald Mason, grandchildren Ajani and Khaliah), sons Marcus (wife Sonya, grandchildren Muira and Jaden) and Johnie (grandson Deigha). Her great-grandchildren are Ellis Mason (parents Ajani and Avis) and Jupiter Rose (parents Deigha and Miriam).
Mrs. Goodlett had 8 brothers and sisters in Cuba (most are deceased) and numerous nieces and nephews (some have emigrated to the US).
Mrs. Goodlett led a remarkable life with numerous accomplishments which we cannot even begin to outline here. Most importantly, she leaves a legacy of love founded upon her years of Christian faith which took root at age 9 in that small Baptist church in Cuba. Her entire family misses her.
A remembrance service will take place on Saturday 1/8/22 at 11 AM at The Jubilee Baptist Church in Taylors, SC. Mask and social distancing will be required to attend the service. Due to the rise in COVID-19 Omicron variant cases, we are asking that interested persons attend the service via the church's live stream on their Facebook page.
