Evelyn  G. Blassingame, formerly of Charlotte, NC, daughter of the late Henry and Emma Gilmer, passed Thursday, September 5, 2019.   She was the last survivor of 10 children, born 8th of 10.  She was formerly married to Willie James Blassingame.

Evelyn dedicated her life to Christ at an early age and joined the Florence Chapel United Methodist Church.

Evelyn moved to White Plains, NY where she joined Trinity United Methodist Church where she served on the usher board and sang on the choir.  Later, she joined Allen AME Zion Church. During her tenure there she served as president of the Chancel Choir.  She was an actively engaged member of the church and helped organize trips and was a member of the choir and served on the usher board.  She loved her church family and they loved her as well.  Evelyn loved to worship the Lord, listen to music and spend time with her family.  She spent her final weeks with family in New Jersey and South Carolina.  Evelyn moved to North Carolina in 2018 where she became a member of Shamrock Senior Center where she loved playing cards and gathering with friends.  Evelyn was lovingly referred to as "Mom".  She spent much of her time traveling whether by land, air or sea.  She recently returned from a family reunion cruise shortly before her passing.

During her early years she was employed by the doll factory where she assembled dolls.  Later, she did domestic work and was employed by the Strotters for an undetermined number of years.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her son Wilbert (Lyn) Franklin Gilmer.  In addition to her son, she was preceded in death by her nine sisters and brothers; Dennis Gilmer, Harneathia Smith, Helen Smith, Irene Kelly, Alma Cleveland, Carroll Gilmer, Velma Gilmer, Curtis Gilmer and Lillie B. Booker.

Left to cherish fond and loving memories is one daughter-in-law Barbara (Bonnie) Williams of Hartsdale, NY and a host of nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be Sunday, September 15, 2019 1:30 PM at Florence Chapel United Methodist Church with burial in the church cemetery.
