Curtis Lee Spurgeon (AKA Curt, Uncle Curt, Papa Curtis), age 70 was born the 5th oldest child to the late James and Willie Muriel Sims Spurgeon, June 13, 1948 in Laurens County, SC.
He was reared in the Happy Valley & Laurel Creek Communities of Greenville County. Having attended Laurel Creek Elementary School, Joseph R. Bryson High School (1963-65), he graduated from Joseph E. Beck High School Class of 1967. Thereafter, he enlisted in the United States Army where he was trained as a Medical Tech, achieved the rank of E-5, served a tour of duty in Vietnam and was honorably discharged in April 1971.
Returning home to Greenville, SC, he briefly worked for the C. F. Sauer Company and Fiber Industries. In August 1971, he married his high school sweetheart, and to this union, two children were born _Lawrence Zaire and Curtrise Le Ontyne'. Seeing the needs before him, he enrolled in Greenville Technical College and received the Associated of Applied Sciences Degree in Textile Management Technology. He graduated with honors August 1974 and began a career in Textile Management with Dan River Woodside, Inc. When the textile industry began to fade, he began employment with Greenville Housing Authority-Target Projects Program in the Fieldcrest Village Community. He made great friends and developed special relationships with "his seniors", as he fondly referred to them. Once this program ceased, he began a 20 plus year career with the Greenville News-Piedmont as a Circulation District Manager. Curt excelled in all areas of his job requirements. He ran routes for downed carriers, handled collections, and had "Family Fun" on the back roads delivering papers in the snow. He topped sales contests and won two exotic trips to Nassau Bahamas and Hawaii.
At an early age, he was baptized at the Fairforest Baptist Church. He was a former Deacon at Reedy Fork Baptist Church in Simpsonville. He was an active choir member and church worker in the churches where he held membership in Greenville, SC.
He moved to Atlanta, Georgia and in retirement worked as a part-time Security Guard at Atlanta Federal Court House.
A man of many talents, he was an outstanding cook and a top fisherman. He loved his volunteer work as a Big Brother to Eric & Wilbur Cline, was a Boy Scout Troop Leader at Open Heart Baptist Church and worked with the midnight Basketball League at Phillis Wheatley Center.
His memories will be cherished by son" Lawrence Z. (Tanshui Monique) Spurgeon; daughter, Curtrise Le Ontyne' Spurgeon; granddaughter: ZaKia Sonequa Spurgeon; brothers, Willie (Ann) James, Alton (Dodi) Bobby, Roy (Edith) Mitchell, Thomas (Betty) Eugene, Charles (Gail) Edward, Gregory Eric Spurgeon; sisters, Mary Alice (Charles A.) Johnson, Shirley J. (Roy Lee) Wilson, Betty Sue (Anthony) Clark; brother-in-law: James Fant and Tryone Banks, the mother of his children Henri Etta V. Sullivan; godson Branden L. Sullivan and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his siblings: Frances L. Young, Anthony T. Spurgeon, Sandra Ann Fant and R. Diyanne Banks.
A Family visitation will take place on Saturday, October 13, 2018 11:00AM at Mountain View Baptist Church with funeral service to start at 12:00 Noon. Graveside burial will take place on Monday, October 15, 2018 10:00AM at M J "Dolly" Cooper Veteran Cemetery in Anderson.
