Sunrise:

Mrs. Annie Gertrude C. Johnson, was born on July 2, 1939, to the late William Buford Cates and the late Annie Mae L. Cates in Spartanburg County, South Carolina.

A Life Well Lived:

Annie was educated in Spartanburg County School District 2.  She was Valedictorian of her class at the former Foster's Grove High School in Cherokee Springs, SC.  After high school, she matriculated to Benedict College in Columbia, SC obtaining a bachelor's degree in math and science.  She pledged Delta Sigma Theta, Inc.  Annie furthered her educated earning a master's degree in education.

At an early age, she joined Holden Chapel Baptist Church and later united with Moore's Chapel Baptist Church, where her husband the late Deacon Clarence C. Johnson was a member.  Annie loved to read; you would often find her with a book in her hand (she was a book worm).  Annie retired from the school system after 30+ years of dedication!

Those she left to cherish and loved dearly are her son, Clarence "Jay" Coleman (Keisha) Johnson, Jr., of Spartanburg, SC; two brothers, Bobby (Mattie) Cates of Mayo, SC and Julius (Elruby) Cates of Spartanburg, SC; two grandchildren, Jamall Johnson and Jasmine Johnson; great grandchildren, Kelani Watson, Gianna Watson and Amari Johnson; two very dear, committed faithful friends and caretakers Jackie and Kevin Miller and nurse Ashley; along with a host of nieces, nephews other loving family and friends.

In addition to her parents and husband Clarence Johnson, she was preceded in death by her brother James R. "Rufus" Cates.

Funeral service will be Friday, August 9, 2024, 12:00 Noon at Sullivan Bros. Mortuary with burial to follow in Lower Shady Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.  Public viewing will take place on Thursday, August 8, 2024, from 2:00 PM until 6:00 PM at Sullivan Bros. Mortuary.  Please keep the Johnson family in your prayers.
